A Clownish Exploration of Artistic Dilemmas
On January 10, 2025, I had the privilege of presenting “AM I A JOKE?!” at the StudioLab Days (Winter Edition) held at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU).
The performance was a combination of humor, introspection, and bitter critique, delivered through the amusing lens of a clown.
Dressed in formal wear, with clown-themed elements and exaggerated makeup, I ventured into the complexities of being a figurative painter in a landscape where figurative art isn’t the norm, much like navigating a foreign language without a map. Inspired by Grayson Perry’s insightful book, “Playing to the Gallery,” the performance aimed to resonate with universal questions about art, beauty, and perception.
Through laughter and reflection, “AM I A JOKE?!” tried to offer an entertaining yet sincere examination of the artist’s role and impostor inclinations, leaving HSLU’s audience with a question: Are we all, in some way, participants in this beautifully chaotic circus of creativity?
